So, I have been dying to blog about my new roman shades....but school started and my life took on a whole new schedule....meaning I have no life outside of school....but luckily for me my amazing sister-in-law, Cynthia, blogged about them:
Now I literally walk into my kitchen, office, master bath and Shay's man cave, and smile! I love each and every shade for different reasons. I can't thank Cynthia and my mother enough! I literally am in love with my SIX new shades. They wouldn't be hanging up if it weren't for the both of them!
I am so grateful to Cynthia for not only taking two days out of her life to come over to my home to instruct and educate my mother and me on how to make roman shades but for the countless phone calls she answered to help me decide on what would go well and what supplies I would need to purchase in order to make the shades. THANK YOU CYNTHIA!!!
I am also deeply grateful to my mother for helping us out as well. She unpicked MANY of my mistakes without protest or complaint. She appeased me when I wanted to make them PERFECT by helping me take them down and down and down and down until they were just right (that doesn't sound like me does it?!?!). THANK YOU MOM!!!!
These two amazing women worked and worked:
Every once in awhile they allowed me to help sew, :-) although my mother ended up having to unpick almost everything I did (Cynthia and her both said they thought it was because my machine needed to be serviced....but I am now questioning my ability to sew?!?!).
I did get pretty good at doing the hardware and mounting the fabric to the boards and wall....

....that was because Cynthia was such a great teacher! Boy did she have patience with me. She would measure and remeasure just to make sure it was all perfect for me:
Doesn't my house look like a sweatshop? I had a BLAST--Hope Cynthia and my mom did as well!
I loved the opportunity to learn how to do something new, create something beautiful and for the time I had to spend with both my mom and Cynthia! It was so fun!
The first drapes to go up were in my kitchen.
They go perfectly with my new lamp!
It literally took all three of us 2 full days to make these three shades.....only because my mom and I were in the learning process.
Unfortunately on day three Cynthia was unable to come over to help (she needed to get her family ready for our family reunion--totally understandable!). She insisted that my mom and I knew how to make them and could do the last three on our own. I was SO nervous! I questioned MY ability to make the shades perfectly without Cynthia's supervision. I thought for sure "I" would some how ruin them....but she taught my mom and I so well that---with my mother's expertise--they turned out GREAT!
The following are the three we did together:
This is the fabric I chose for our downstairs office:
When I first showed Shay this fabric online he didn't like it. He said it was "too bright." I tried to persuade him but he stuck to his guns and said he would prefer something else.
Later, when I asked him what fabric he thought would go well in the office, this is what he chose:
I laughed because it was the same color as the previous one.
So....I became a bit sneaky and purchase both fabrics. The one Shay chose for his "man cave" upstairs and the other fabric for the office. Luckily when Shay saw the office he said he really like how it turned out. I didn't say "I told you so," although I did think it :-)
This is a picture of the master bath roman shade my mom and I made:
When I purchase the fabric I thought the leaves were browns (since my towels and such are brown in my bathroom I thought it would be perfect). When it came --and I actually went back and read the description online-- I realized that the leaves were black, gray and tans. At first I wasn't sure that I would like the colors but after hanging it up in my bathroom I think it looks fabulous!
At that point I was on cloud nine! I would walk in and out of each room and admire how they turned out. I would pull them up and down! I even started to imagine what type of kitchen table I would need to get to go with my new shades and lamp.
Then what I consider to be a miracle happened.......My mother had flown into town a few days before our family reunion to check out some possible properties to purchase and to help me with my drapes. After we finished our drapes we went to look at a home that was for sale close to mine. It was a former "Parade of Homes" house and it was beautiful. The woman was an interior designer and had great taste. I love everything in the home! When she came around the corner I told her how much I loved her home and especially her dinning table. She quickly said, "Do you want to buy it?" I was speechless. WHAT? She explained that her husband was a builder and with the economy the way it is they needed to downsize and the table wasn't going to fit in her new home. She told me a price that was WAY cheap. I told her I would have to talk to my husband and get back with her. She then said that she would also throw in the custom glass top. I knew it was a great deal but needed to chat with Shay about it. That night Shay was a bit hesitant because it was $500 more than we had budgeted for a kitchen table. The next day I texted her and told her that I was interested but that it was about $500.00 more than Shay and I were planning on spending and that I was "working" on Shay to say yes. She quickly texted me back and said she would give it to me for what Shay and I had wanted to spend if we would removed it that night! I couldn't believe the text! I read it out loud to my mom and grandparents (we were visiting my grandparents while waiting to go see more homes).
My grandparents immediately offered me their truck to move the table that night. My mom even offered to buy it if we didn't want it because it was such a good deal. I immediately called Shay who was beyond happy because it was within our budget.
So that night we went to pick up the table. The table turned out to be nicer than I originally though. It is SOLID wood and so heavy. We even had to take it all apart and recruit individuals to help us move it.
As we were removing it I noticed a beautiful rug under it. I asked the husband if he would sell it as well. He said sure for X amount of money. I thought it was a bit too high so I said no thank you. Then for the rest of that night I regretted my decision. I kept bringing it up to my mom and Shay. Finally my mother said she would pitch in to get it for me for my birthday (it was Friday night and my birthday was Sunday). Then Shay said to go ahead and get it!
So Saturday morning we ran back over to the home and picked up the rug.
So for my birthday I not only got a new book, camping chair and beautiful new roman shades but a rug as well that makes the table and shades look even better!
What do you think:
Also for my birthday my sister bought me a set of Crate and Barrel candle stick holders and candles that you can see on the table.
Now I am about finished with this area of my home....
Sewing up a Storm: Roman Shades for a New Home
Cynthia's pictures are WAY better than the ones I will be posting below and they give a much better idea of what they really look like (she has an AMAZING camera to say the least and knows how to use it). Unfortunately all I have to work with is myself and my cell phone so hopefully you'll take a look at her blog before you continue with this post to get a better idea of how they really turned out then what is showing here (BTW: Also on Cynthia's blog are links to other post by her on how to make roman shades. They really aren't that hard to make. The hardest part is picking your fabric and measuring exactly correct).

I LOVE them!
I think they go perfectly!
My family really knows how to make a home really look nice!
Then I scored again when I found another lamp that matched my new chandelier......

Now I am about finished with this area of my home....
....I just need to have Cynthia help me make curtains for the sliding glass door
....buy a pendent light for my island (the one I blogged about earlier, that my sister bought, is sold out so I am back to square one on what to get)
But those things may take awhile to get done since school has started....but I will enjoy what is done until then!
Thanks everyone for helping make our house a beautiful home!
We love it and think it looks great!!!!
